EXPEDITION DISCOUNTS:
“Addictions can be very, very bad but addiction itself is not bad.
It’s a case of what you’re addicted to.
You better live each day like it’s your last, ‘cos one day you’re going to be right”.
Ray Charles.
The most famous quote attributed to eminent English political theorist and scientist Joseph Priestley (1733 – 1804) was:
“The more elaborate our means of communication, the less we communicate”.
From today’s technological communication standpoint, this statement seems a little rash but most people would give him a pass for this foolishness given that his other claim to fame was that he discovered oxygen.
One man does not forget, nor forgive and his name is Tom Sjogren.
For the last 10 years Tom and via the business he founded, Human Edge Technology, has waged a relentless campaign prove Priestley wrong and not just a bit wrong.
“Ocean rowers, they’ll be able to send texts from the mid-Atlantic, K2 climbers, I’ll have them live streaming from the top of the Abruzzi Ridge and Baffin Island wall-rats will be internet dating. We’ll see how funny Priestly thinks he is now!” Of course Sjorgen doesn’t say that’s his motivation, what he says is:
HumanEdgeTech (HET) is a unique, no-nonsense virtual expedition tech warehouse for satellite communications and edge technology. Created by explorers for explorers, the store is user-friendly with no-hassle pricing, expedition-tested gear, expedition-ready hardware, fast delivery and payments and delivers worldwide within 72 hours.
A reasonable question you might be asking at this point is: “Why is this even the slightest bit interesting?”
Well here’s the thing, there are several reasons why someone organises a trip or expedition in the outdoors. One may be to escape from outside contact and keep the memories in their head to be shared by no-one else.
Or one may want share these experiences with a wider audience via the internet or to communicate such messages as: “I appear to be hopelessly lost, could someone assist me to continue living?”
If you are more in the second category than the first, then you broadly have 2 further options to choose from:
Option 1.
You do some disjointed fiddling around on Google which you elevate to calling “My Research” on all the bits of kit that you think you’ll need to communicate with the outside world.
Then, all the components get shipped to you and in your lounge room, you endeavour to get any of it to synchronise or work in the slightest. You fail to do this and then say:
“It can’t be that difficult, I’ll do it at base camp or in the tent at night and given there is no alcohol in the Hoggar mountains, I will go to the local pub right now
The last act of this tragi-comedy is if you do get component A from the Xiang Ho Electrical and Beanshoot Corporation to work with component B from the Smolensk Shipyard and Widget Collective, then there’s a fair chance as you take that last step off the top of the Troll Wall in your wingsuit that someone will say:
“Dude, there’s nothing on the screen anymore and what’s that burning smell?”
Option 2.
You realise that in comparison to someone who knows what they’re doing, you are a hopeless amateur who however doesn’t want to balls up this side of the trip.
So, you get Sjorgren on the phone and say to him:
“Mate, I need an expedition laptop, 2 solar panels, 2 satellite phones and the software to update my site while I lead the first all-transvestite crossing of Antarctica”.
And he’ll say:
“Here are the details and can I see some of the “special” photos now?”

- Polar package.
True, technically there is another option and if you’ve got the time and tech inclination to consider all the factors and put everything together yourself, then that’s a fair bet.
But maybe think about it like this ……
Your doctor rings you up and says: “You need a CAT scan, like tomorrow. I’m booking you in to hospital”.
And you say:
“Oh I don’t think so, I’ll make my own CAT scanner, I’ve got a soldering iron and 3 old microwaves, how hard can it be?”
That’ll do it, Dr Tom’s surgery is open for business here
